2027 King Charles III 1oz Britannia

The 2027 1oz Gold Britannia from The Royal Mint is a coin worth having this year in particular. 2027 marks forty years since the gold Britannia was first struck in 1987, and for this year only the coin carries a ‘40’ privy mark set within a wave, with the anniversary number worked into the textured background behind Britannia.

The reverse keeps Philip Nathan’s much-loved design of Britannia with her trident, shield and olive branch, and the obverse carries the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. Each coin contains one troy ounce of 999.9 fine (24 carat) gold and is struck at The Royal Mint in Llantrisant, just up the road from our Cardiff shop.

Security features

• Latent image: tilt the coin and the padlock beneath Britannia changes into a trident.
• Surface animation: the background lines appear to move like waves as the light catches them. On the 2027 coin this texture also shows the number 40.
• Micro-text: the inner rim carries the Latin inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN, meaning ‘an ornament and a safeguard’.
• Tincture lines: fine lines on Britannia’s shield pick out the colours of the Union Flag.
