For 2027 The Royal Mint has added a ‘40’ privy mark framed by a wave, plus a textured background that brings the anniversary number into the design, marking four decades since the first gold Britannia in 1987. Philip Nathan’s portrait of Britannia with trident, shield and olive branch sits on the reverse, and the official coinage portrait of King Charles III on the obverse.
Security features
Latent image: tilt the coin and the padlock beneath Britannia changes into a trident.
Surface animation: the background lines appear to move like waves as the light catches them. On the 2027 coin this texture also shows the number 40.
Micro-text: the inner rim carries the Latin inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN, meaning ‘an ornament and a safeguard’.
Tincture lines: fine lines on Britannia’s shield pick out the colours of the Union Flag.
