The 2027 1/2oz Gold Britannia has all the anniversary details of the full ounce coin in a smaller, more affordable size. It celebrates forty years of the gold Britannia, first issued by The Royal Mint in 1987, with a ‘40’ wave privy mark and a background texture showing the anniversary number. Neither will appear on any other year.
Philip Nathan’s classic Britannia, holding her trident, shield and olive branch, is on the reverse, with the official coinage portrait of King Charles III on the obverse. The coin holds half a troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold, struck in Llantrisant, South Wales.
Security features
Latent image: tilt the coin and the padlock beneath Britannia changes into a trident.
Surface animation: the background lines appear to move like waves as the light catches them. On the 2027 coin this texture also shows the number 40.
Micro-text: the inner rim carries the Latin inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN, meaning ‘an ornament and a safeguard’.
Tincture lines: fine lines on Britannia’s shield pick out the colours of the Union Flag.
