Has someone asked you to buy gold?

If a caller saying they’re from the police or your bank has told you to buy gold, coins or a watch and hand it to a courier – stop. It’s a scam, and it’s known as courier fraud.

The police and your bank will never ask you to withdraw money, buy gold, or hand anything over to a courier.

How the scam works

  1. 1You get a call from someone claiming to be a police officer or your bank’s fraud team.
  2. 2They say your money is at risk, or that they need your help catching a criminal.
  3. 3You’re asked to buy gold to “keep it safe” or “as evidence” – and told not to tell anyone, including shop staff.
  4. 4A “courier” or “undercover officer” comes to your home to collect it. The gold is never seen again.

What to do

  • Hang up. A genuine officer or bank won’t mind.
  • Use a different phone, or wait a few minutes before calling anyone. Scammers can keep your line open after you put the receiver down.
  • Call 159 to reach your own bank safely.
  • If a courier is on the way, call 999.
  • Talk to us. If you’re in the shop and unsure, just ask. Our team is happy to help.

If something doesn’t feel right about a purchase, we may pause and have a quiet chat before going ahead. It’s never to be nosy – it’s to make sure your money stays yours. We’d rather lose a sale than see a customer lose their savings.
