200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo

The Battle of Waterloo took place on Sunday 18th June, 1815. It started at 11 am, 2 hours later than intended, as the ground had been too damp from the previous night’s bad weather. Napoleon led the French troops to battle. The Prussian and Anglo armies worked as an allied force, and were led by General Blücher and the Duke of Wellington respectively. After hours of fighting (most of it was fought in close combat) and 41,000 casualties, Napoleon was defeated and the battle brought over 20 years of conflict to an end.

The design on the reverse of the coin depicts the triumphant handshake between the Duke of Wellington and General Blücher. Designed by sculptor, artist and illustrator, David Lawrence, the coin captures the spirit of camaraderie. The obverse of the uncirculated coin shows the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of the Queen.

This proof version of the coin features the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. The edge inscription reads, “THE NEAREST RUN THING YOU EVER SAW”, a quote from the Duke of Wellington and is about how close the battle was.
